PEPs and their definitions

Level 1 PEPs include: Ruling royal families; Heads of state and government; Members of government and parliament (National and federal level); Senior officials of other state agencies and bodies and high-ranking civil servants; Heads and senior officials of the military, judiciary, law enforcement and boards of central banks; Top-ranking officials of political parties.

Level 2 PEPs: also referred to as 'Medium-high Risk PEPs' include Officials of the state, military, and law enforcement at a senior position High-rank civil service officers, leaders of religious groups and state agencies.

Level 3 PEPs: eg Heads and senior members of International NGOs; Heads, board members and senior officials of Trade-Unions; Advisors, heads of cabinet and similar roles of senior officials of the military, judiciary, law enforcement, central banks, and other state agencies, authorities, and state bodies; Senior civil servants at regional and provincial level; Middle ranking diplomats; Mayors and members of legislative and executive bodies at local level.

Relatives and Close Associates sometimes referred to as ‘PEPs by association’ are a type of politically exposed person who shares a family or friendship connection to a PEP. As outlined in FATF guidance, that connection may be a direct family relation or a connection through marriage (or civil partnership).
